Saravane launches longer birth spacing campaign

(KPL) The Ministry of Health in cooperation with Mother and Child Committee of Saravane Province launched a campaign on longer birth spacing with the sponsorship from the UNFPA and the Doctors without Borders. A launching ceremony of the campaign was attended by Vice-Governor of Saravane Province, Mr. Khouthdala Vongsaravanh, President of the Mother and Child Committee of Saravane Province, Mr. Sisouvanh Vongchomesy, Head of the Health Service in Saravane Province and representatives of parties concerned. "The provision of healthcare to mothers and children is priority of the Party and government to reduce the mortality rates of these groups of people,"said Vice-Governor of Saravane Province, Mr. Khouthdala Vongsaravanh.

"Over the last twenty years, we have promoted the provision of healthcare to mothers and children," said President of the Mother and Child Committee of Saravane Province, Mr. Sisouvanh Vongchomesy.

"Healthcare promotion activities have been held at village and district levels. As a result the mortality rate of mothers has reduced from 650 per 100,000 child births in 1990 to 45 per 200,000 childbirths at present,"added the official.

The Government has aimed to shake the country off the UN's list of least developed countries by 2020 and achieve the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by 2015.

The MDGs include : Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger, Achieve universal primary education, Promote gender equality and empower women, Reduce child mortality, Improve maternal health, Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases, Ensure environmental sustainability and Develop a Global Partnership for Development.
