Laos to have 62,000 people literate in coming academic year

(KPL) The government has planned to have 62,000 people able to read and write in the 2010-2011 academic year, according to Minister of Education, Mr. Khamphanh Viphavanh.

Last year, over 60,000 people in 14 districts across the country became literate after attending an intensive training course, according to Mr. Khamphanh.

"Eighty five point one per cent of the trainees are aged 15-45 years and the percentage of those aged over 15 years is 80.32," said the minister.

With the achievement in illiteracy eradication recorded last year, the country has 69 districts declared as literate.

The minister last week held a press conference on the celebration of the world illiteracy eradication day (September 8) and said that the government paid attention to education and focused on illiteracy eradication of the Lao ethnic people across the country.

The illiteracy eradication is included in the next five-year Socio Economic Development Plan (2010-2011) of the government according to the minister .
