Both Laos and France have longstanding diplomatic relations which have been strengthened in recent years. The bilateral relations and cooperation are now in a very good atmosphere as reflected in the historical visit to the Lao People's Democratic Republic by HE Francois Hollande, the President of the Republic of France on the occasion of the 9th ASEM Summit in Vientiane in November 2012 and the historical visit to the Re public of France by President Choummaly Sayasone in October 2013.
The government of France has provided assistance to Laos through various projects with successful outcomes, as well as developed French investment in Laos, particularly the Nam Theun 2 project.
Laos and the United Nations have also enjoyed good relations over the years. The United Nations has provided assistance to the Lao PDR which has contributed to the Government’s efforts to achieve the MDGs and the socio-economic development of the country.
There have been high level visits from both sides in recent years as well. President Choummaly Sayasone attended the 65th session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2010 in New York, while the Secretary General of the United Nations paid an official visit to Laos in April 2009.
