Health Minister urges anti-mosquito-borne disease efforts

(KPL) Minister of Health Eksavang Vongvichith on Monday held a press conference urging public participation in efforts against mosquito borne diseases including dengue fever and malaria as the country is in rainy season during which mosquito borne disease is likely to outbreak.

Dr. Eksavang also aimed the press conference held at the premises of his Ministry at promoting preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases and the collaboration between grassroots authorities and government and private sectors as well as surveillance system.

"Annually, between 50-100 million people in west Asia-Pacific were reportedly infected with dengue virus, equalling 75 % of people with the virus worldwide and 20,000 in the region dye of the disease," said Dr. Eksavang.

In Laos, the number of human deaths due to dengue fever is increased on annual basis thus the preventive measures should be observed in order to reduce the mortality rate.

Last year, over 3,900 were infected with dengue virus and seven people died of dengue fever in the Lao PDR, according to the Minister.
