Laos, Timor Leste enhance ties
(KPL) Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Thongloun Sisoulith met visiting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Timor Leste Zacarias Albano da Costa and his delegation in Vientiane yesterday.
Mr. Zacarias Albano da Costa aims his official visit to Laos at enhancing the friendly cooperation between Laos and Timor Leste.
At the meeting, both sides highly valued the fine friendship relationship and cooperation between the two countries since they established diplomatic ties in July 2002.
Both sides shared common views that the visit by Foreign Minister of Timor Leste constitutes a significant event as the two countries are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. Both sides considered the anniversary as a historic day of cooperation between Laos and Timor Leste.
Both sides informed each other the current achievement of socio-economic development in their respective countries as well as their participation in regional and international arenas.
Concerning the interior affairs in Timor Leste, the visiting Minister of Timor Leste informed the host side of the preparation for presidential election and national assembly election of Timor Leste which will be held by midyear as well as for its accession to the Asean membership.
Both sides also shared common interest on some international and regional issues –related to peace and development spheres.
They also discussed the direction of cooperation between the two countries in the future. They agreed to increase the exchange visit of officials at all levels to ensure an increased mutual understanding.
Mr. Thongloun Sisoulith reaffirmed the Lao government’s support for an accession to Asean membership of Timor Leste in the future.
