Laos, Cambodia agree on border demarcation project

(KPL) Laos and Cambodia have agreed to allow technical officials from the two nations begin a border demarcation project in six locations along their common borderline in December this year.

The agreement was reached at a meeting between border officials of both countries held on August 27-29 in Stung Treng province of Cambodia to discuss the demarcation project.

A Lao delegation, led by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Bounkeut Sangsomsak, held discussions with Cambodian officials, headed by Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Long Visalo.

The locations set for demarcation include the source of the Lamphao River, the Veunkham area, the area between the Road No.13 South in Laos and Road No.7 of Cambodia, and the area of Nachampa village.

After completion of the project in the six agreed locations, the two nations will continue conducting a survey in other border locations, including near the Ta-ngao stream.

Meeting participants advised local authorities in the respective nations to maintain cooperation in protecting the environment and educating villagers livin g near the shared border to respect immigration laws and related regulations of both countries.

The meeting was held in an atmosphere of friendship, mutual understanding and neighbourly amity.

The meeting also saw an agreement to continue conducting border surveys and demarcation in locations already decided upon by the governments of Laos and Cambodia.

The project will significantly contribute to clearly defining the borderline between the two nations as well as contribute to making the shared border an area of peace, stability, mutual trust, friendship and cooperation between Laos and Cambodia.
