Sepon mine supports training and human resources development in Laos
(KPL) MMG Lane Xang Minerals Limited Sepon is continuing to invest in human resource development and poverty reduction in the Lao PDR, according to its press release.
On 15 May, the company signed a Memorandum of Understanding on human resource development for 2013 to 2015 with Savannakhet Technical and Vocational School.
Both parties pledged to strengthen cooperation on human resource development and vocational training for high school graduates in local communities close to the mine. The agreement also provides skills development for teachers, equipment, tools and teaching materials.
"The objective is to support the Lao Government’s poverty eradication targets through vocational education for people in remote areas,"said Ms Samantha Wilkinson, Human Resource Manager at Sepon mine. "This reinforces the government's policy on addressing trade skills shortages in the Lao PDR and will benefit the community by creating sustainable livelihoods in the future."
The mine began cooperating closely with Savannakhet Technical and Vocational School in 2006. Since then, more than 100 students from Vilabouly district have undertaken vocational training courses lasting between 18 months and five years. Areas of study include trades training and business administration. Many of the graduates from these courses now work at the mine. Earlier this year, ten students from local communities graduated with a Diploma in Business and Management; all have found permanent jobs with the company. There are currently 14 students studying at the school who are sponsored by Sepon mine.
