Fish in Nong Hane lake is eatable
(KPL) Fish in Nong Hane lake, Pakngum district, Vientiane was declared fit for consumption though the toxic wastewater containing cyanide from the Lao-Indochina Tapioca Factory spilled into this lake some weeks ago. The Lao-Indochina Tapioca Factory and local authorities of Ban Namtham village fostered a group of mass media people to this lake last Sunday. The hosts entertained them and they all dined on the fish dishes, cooked and uncooked dishes, and the fish was from Nong Hane lake. However, the Water Resource and Environment Authority had only unofficially confirmed that the fish in this lake is fit for human consumption. Early last week, the local people who live near this lake fished and ate the fish from it and they are still very much alive. However, other local people are adopting a cautious stance and they would not consume any fish from their nearby lake until there is official confirmation that it is safe for consumption by this government authority. However, a medical team from Pakngum district went to this lake to inspect the fish on June 22 and they advised the locals not to eat the fish in its raw state and to eat it only after they had been cooked.
