Viengsay declared literate

(KPL) Viengsay, Houaphanh province, has announced its success in providing an intensive primary education course for its residents aged 15-40.

Viengsay becomes the third district in this northeastern province Houaphanh and the 60th in the country to have declared success in eradicating illiteracy.

The ceremony to announce the education achievement was held on Thursday 4 at the main stadium of Viengsay district.

The ceremony was attended by Mr. Litou Bouapao, Deputy-Minister of Education, Mr. Onethong Phengsomphanh, an expert from the Education Service of Houaphanh province. Over 700 teachers and students were also present at the event.

Viengsay has 107 villages with a population of 34,026 in 5,781 families. Its ethnic composition consists of lowland Lao (74.54%), highland Lao or Hmong (15.86%) and Khmou (9.4%).

Houaphanh has 96% of its school-aged children access to education. Over the last decade, the province has made a great effort in eradicating illiteracy among its people aged 15-40 by giving them access to intensive educational training courses.

The province still records 1,216 people illiterate, 814 of whom are female.

Last year, over 1,500 people in the province attended intensive educational training courses and 735 of them were female.
